Betaine (N,N,N- -trimethyloglycine) is an organic chemical compound and a derivative of the amino acid glycine. Betaine was first discovered in the 19th century in sugar beets (Beta vulgaris), hence the name Betaine.
Betaine is a catabolic source of methyl groups, making it possible for the formation of compounds such as methionine, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), phosphatidyl choline and carnitine. Betaine contributes to the maintaining of the proper metabolism of homocysteine and is used to treat high levels of homocysteine (hyperhomocysteinemia). High levels of homocysteine are associated with the development of vascular diseases (eg. Atherosclerosis).
Betaine has a positive effect on the liver, reduces the risk of fat deposition in the liver, and also protects this organ from hepatotoxins (eg. ethanol, carbon tetrachloride). Betaine exerts osmoprotectant effects. This means that it helps protect the cells from changes in osmotic pressure. It also takes part in many biochemical changes relevant for the human body.
Betaine can also be used as a digestive aid, and is particularly helpful in patients with insufficient production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
The consumption of betaine should not exceed 1-2,5g per day.
Do not exceed the recommended dose.
